How to Choose the Right Load Cell for Your Application

The right load cell for your project depends on capacity, environment, mounting geometry and signal interface. The criteria below cover the majority of selection decisions.

1. Capacity range and safety margin

Select a rated capacity 1.5 to 2× the maximum live load you expect. This gives headroom for transient overloads, off-center moments and long-term drift, and keeps the sensor in its most accurate operating range.

2. Material and environmental protection

Aluminium alloy housings suit dry industrial and commercial environments. Stainless steel is required for food, pharmaceutical, chemical and washdown applications. Confirm the IP rating matches your installation environment.

3. Output signal and indicator matching

Most Vektorforce load cells output a ratio-metric 2.0 mV/V signal matched to standard weighing indicators. For long cable runs, multi-sensor systems or digital integration, an RS-485 or CAN-bus digital output model is available.

4. OEM and customization

What is a load cell?
A load cell is a strain-gauge force-measurement sensor built around a precisely machined elastic element. When force is applied, strain gauges bonded to the element change resistance in a Wheatstone bridge, producing an output voltage proportional to the applied force. Vektorforce load cells are factory-calibrated and shipped with a calibration certificate.
